SURSUMCORDA – HISTORICAL OVERVIEW ______________________English Version: Flavia Cubeddu | Valeria Ancillotti
On a rainy day, out in the open, shoes and garments soaking wet don’t necessarily help in keeping away the cold. Even though it is summer, it seems that in August Ireland must be the worse place to travel on foot, without any money, with the only burden of carrying two wet classical guitars.
Generally, after playing a few notes, loose coins initially give off a muffled sound that slowly slowly becomes more pronounced as they amass at the bottom of the straw hat. Today this is not going to happen.
On the road again. We all know that, it always happens this way: all in one day.
Giampiero “Nero” Sanzari and Piero Bruni decide to bunch up all, it is time to return home; all those songs which speak about the grass fields that were walked upon with bare feet, about asphalt-scented soles, today they can convey more of a message.
The memory goes back to those places, to those European journeys enriched with encounters, every time a new story. The language barriers obliterated by music, that music that comes from Italy, reminiscent of sun-drenched places because as the old saying edifies “music is a universal language which unites men, women and children and never separates them”.
Soon, from this solemn belief the question is raised impulsively, adamant like rain, a pleasant obsession: “this music, rising from the road, can it really rise to a point where it touches the heart of many?”
“L'Albero dei Bradipi” (The Sloth Tree) is born. The Sursumcorda have a long way to go: musicians are brought together from the world of classical music, jazz, folk, pop and ethnic music of which twelve musicians will take part. It seems difficult, if not impossible to create unison of such diverse mentalities but then, poetry comes to the rescue and serves as a binder.
The poetic language is a direct instrument, lacking the element of complex wording; poetry and music become as one, rendering more effective the synesthetic ability of the Sursumcorda’s style: to listen also signifies to see colors, perceive smell and enhance taste.
The music listener can only imagine, therefore he can travel. In order to intensify even further this possibility, instruments of different pitches are employed, more often enough they combine in an unusual way, but always adhering to the text of the poetry, the descriptive essence of the words.
After l'Albero dei Bradipi, various producers and directors have noticed that the style portrayed by Sursumcorda has characteristics that go “beyond time and space”, that is to say beyond description, not geographical, in simple terms “transversal”. Such versatility enabled the group to compose seven soundtracks for various documentaries, from Italian pictorial art to classical and social themes and of notable current affairs.
The Sursumcorda have played at the Royal Palace, Milan, on the closing day of the Guercino’s exhibit; the first step has been completed.
L’Albero dei Bradipi has been printed and distributed in the United States by Passion Records in Boston.
Giampiero “Nero” Sanzari (voice guitar), Piero Bruni (guitar) and Francesco Saverio Gliozzi (cello) remain as part of the old group, joined by Fabio Carimati (drums) and Emanuele “Manolo” Cedrone (percussion instruments). The new cd “La porta dietro la cascata” (The Door Behind the Waterfall) begins to take form.
The desire to bring their ideas to a level of greater maturity is achieved thanks to the new relationship with Fausto Dasé and the Accademia del Suono.
The artistic ability and sensitivity of a producer such as Fausto Dasé, in combination with an organization such as the Accademia del Suono, an important learning center for music education, allows the group to broaden further their involvement, creating the ideal environment in order to reach the highest level of quality and expressiveness.
